This is for tips on how to care for your new puppy.

Look for this page to grow as we get time to write down

Marilyn's life experiences Loving, Raising, Breeding Dachshunds.

Tip 1. Puppies have to Go #1 and or #2 as soon as they get up from sleeping and right after they eat.

Tip 1a. Our Puppies get up very early, and go to bed at sundown. Be patient till he or she gets on your schedule.

Tip 2.  Puppies chew things. Give them something to chew, but not your HAND. If you don't give them something to chew they will find something.

Tip 2a.  Puppies put everything in their mouths. Remove all choking hazards from the pups living area.

Tip 2b. You must consider all choking hazards when giving things to chew. Chew Ropes can become entangled around the intestines resulting in emergency surgery or death. Squeakers can choke and kill. Small  leather chews can cause death by choking, (when it gets smaller the pup will try to swallow it). Consider this before you leave a pup alone with a toy or chewy.

Tip 2c. Blockage from toys and or ropes can prevent the pup from pooping. If the pup cannot poop then take it to the vet right away, a pup that cannot poop can be dead in 3 days.

Tip 3. If you have a Hope Dachshund it was given protection from dis- temper (and other dog diseases) before you took him or her home.  It was part of the 7 in 1 series of shots given. The shot record will indicate the number, type and when shots were given. Once the 3 shot series is complete  a Rabies shot at 6 months is all that is needed for the first year.

Tip 3a. Your baby came with a shot record and it is important that it be used. Over inoculation is as bad as none. This is the latest protocol in the dog world.

Tip 4. Resist the temptation to give people food. This is not good for the pup and will cause a change in the stools.

Tip 4a. IF YOUR PUPPY CANNOT POOP......12 HOURS MEANS A PROBLEM, GET PUPPY TO VET. 24 HOURS BIG TROUBLE, GET PUPPY TO VET RIGHT AWAY.

Puppy could swallow any number of things to plug it up, resulting in surgery and or  death. Be careful of what puppy plays with and eats.

Tip 5. Once the puppy sleeps with you in your bed it will always want to sleep there. If you want the puppy to sleep in its own bed, start from day one.

Tip 5a. If the puppy sleeps with you make sure to lift it up and down or use a ramp. Jumping is very bad on the Puppy, it would be like you jumping off a 6 foot ladder.

Tip 6. Jumping off of a couch, stair steps, or up and down repeatedly may cause permanent injury to the puppy. Lift them up and down or use ramps when needed. Remember these are little dogs.

Tip 7. Marilyn offers in your Home training, and can be very helpful over the phone.  Please do not hesitate to call her at 503-931-8788, She loves to help.

Tip 8. It takes 18 months for the pup to completely develop and grow. The joints do not completely set into place until then. Resist letting the pup jump from furniture, and please consider this when entering performance events.

Tip 9. If you catch your puppy eating poop you can try two options. A. pick up the poop as soon as it hits the ground. This works really well. B. Try a small amount of meat tenderizer on the puppy food. You should call 503-931-8788 and ask Marilyn what kind and how much BEFORE you try this. I have seen this work too. Option A is the most effective.
